Last week, Mrs. Lundmark’s 8th Grade Gold students carved pumpkins in a study of correlation. They measured the weight of the pumpkin, the circumference, and counted the seeds inside. The conclusion: larger pumpkins have more seeds, with a correlation coefficient of about 0.6. We had a great time! A big thanks to all the parents and Kroger for donating pumpkins!
Mr. Outsen and Ms. Papanicholas arranged for U.S. Representative Robin Kelly to visit BUGC and speak to our students about the life and responsibilities of a Congress woman.

Mrs. Austiff and Ms. Alvis challenged their students to persevere by carrying 5 gallons of water around the track this week. The main character in their novel walked half a day or more to get water for her family each day. Students realized the hardships that many children their age face in Third World countries.
In Mrs. Lundmark’s class students demonstrated their knowledge of different types of correlation and correlation coefficient values using their Lucky Charms as points on a scatter plot. Then they used Desmos to determine the correlation between the total number of cereal pieces in their sample and how many marshmallows they had. They plotted the data, found an appropriate linear model, and determined the correlation coefficient. And of course they were able to eat their sample when the work was done! A big thanks to the parents who donated the boxes of cereal!

Upper Grade Center is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as a part of the Signs of Suicide® (SOS) Prevention Program next Tuesday, September 24th and Thursday, September 26th.
Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
To impress upon students that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help if they need it

This morning SRO Garcia walked the BUGC students through a presentation about what A.L.I.C.E is and why it is important. With the help of Bourbonnais police and fire departments, students were able to practice various scenarios that required barricading and/or evacuating classrooms. #keepingkidssafe
Sometimes keeping it simple is fun as well. In this picture BUGC students are doing Flashlight Reading. As far as teaching strategies goes this is an old one but still very effective.
In Fab-Lab, BUGC students learn the design process from concept to actual production. This student actually created his own remote control car!!
BUGC STUDENTS MAKING MATH HANDS ON:The students are creating bungee cords out of rubber bands and finding the relationship between the number of rubber bands they used and how far Barbie falls. Using their data, they will create a linear model to predict how many rubber bands they would need for Barbie to bungee jump off the balcony in the gym.
