Shabbona and Shepard students had a great time during The Incredible Bats presentation! They made observations and compared the diversity of bats in different habitats. The students learned about bat survival and the ways that bats help our world. They gained knowledge on various kinds of micro and megabats, bat anatomy, explored bat vocabulary words including: mammal, nocturnal, roost, echolocation, herbivore, omnivore, habitat, pup, colony, adaptation, survival, nocturnal and so much more! At the end of the presentation the students got to see two different fruit bats, and an armadillo named Armando. 🦇

Mrs. Bergin’s Pumpkin Jack- We finished off our Halloween/pumpkin unit by reading the story Pumpkin Jack. It is about a little boy who carves his first Jack-o-lantern and when his pumpkin begins to rot he takes it to the garden where he watches it decay. He is surprised to find a sprout emerge in the spring and tends to it and grows a new pumpkin. We reviewed the life cycle of a pumpkin and worked to make our own classroom Pumpkin Jack that we hope will sprout in the spring as well. Our class will continue to make observations and keep data weekly on how Pumpkin Jack is doing.

Last month, Mrs. Studebaker’s scientists learned about plant parts and their functions! The students have also been learning about the Scientific Method and they were able to make a conclusion about their hypothesis! They learned that stems are like straws! Stems act like a straw sucking up water and nutrients from the roots and soil and delivering them to the rest of the plant. Mrs. Studebaker placed flowers in water and added food coloring into the water. The students then hypothesized what they thought the food coloring would do to the flower. The food coloring allowed the students to see the journey that the nutrients and water take through the work of the stem!” 🌱
