6th grade reading classes are engulfed in the novel Esperanza Rising. Emmeline Sovinski brought in a yarn doll, she made, to show Mr. Burda’s Advanced Reading class. The doll is exactly like the one described in the book. Emmaline talked to the class, explaining the basic steps taken to make the doll. Emmeline is also able to crochet and knit, so she is using her skills to inspire others to make a yarn doll of their own.

Liberty 5th and 6th grade students participated in Open Mic night at Bourbonnais Public Library. Mrs Edmonson was instrumental in the organization of the event. Those in attendance had a fun night with original and famous poetry, stories, and jokes. Many families came and listened to their children read aloud and deliver performances. Even a few siblings joined in on the fun!

Students in 6th grade are working in small groups to find textual evidence from their novel Bud, not Buddy. It's incredible to come down the hallway on various days and see them strewn about engaged in learning.

Students in Mrs. Edmonson’s class engage in a Socratic Seminar. In a Socratic Seminar activity, students help one another understand the ideas, issues, and values reflected in a text through a group discussion format. Students are responsible for facilitating their group discussion around the ideas in the text.

Last year, 5th grade students at Liberty in Mrs. Laskey's and Mrs. Wilkie's science classes have benefited from the ESP Energy grant. The Energizing Student Potential Program is designed to infuse energy into the STEM classroom. The STEM project was centered around hydroponics. The students grew plants from seeds in water. While the hydroponic system was successful, we never saw vegetables. Students took home the plants and these two girls returned this fall with the fruits of our labor. ESP is sponsored by: The Exelon Foundation, ComEd, Pepco, Nicor Gas, Peoples and North Shore Gas, and BP.
