Please read the attached District Communication Letter regarding Covid-19. While positive Covid-19 cases have been experienced by the District, we have also experienced a downward trend in the total number of individuals isolated from in-person instruction. Even with this situation today, our total number of individuals isolated from in-person instruction has reached its fourth lowest number to date. We believe that our mitigation strategies and constant communication during this crisis has assisted in allowing us to manage this crisis to the best of our ability. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oGxXAFKERFDjJDDotJxGU8nMoY_eU6MSaUj5b_nX0VA/edit?usp=sharing

Dear BESD #53 Families and Community, I want to thank you for your trust and flexibility as we worked to return to in-person instruction this school year. Our ability to open and stay open has only been made possible by everyone coming together as a team. While I can not predict the future, I can provide our current data trends that we assess daily to help make our decisions. The good news is that we have been open since August 19th for students. This means that we have made it past 14 total days since the 1st day of in-person instruction. Therefore, we now are afforded the opportunity to truly begin the assessment of sustainability for our in-person instructional model. Over this past week, the data indicates that we have experienced a good decline in the number of individuals required to be isolated from in-person instruction in the District. I understand that our trend data could change tomorrow as we are not immune to Covid-19. However, I want to focus on the fact that we are currently trending well for a continuation of in-person instruction. Have a Happy and Safe Labor Day Weekend! Sincerely, Dr. Adam Ehrman, Superintendent

Dear BESD #53 Families and Community, We are aware that an article was written about BESD #53 stating “Nearly 90 in quarantine in Bourbonnais Elementary district”. It is important to remember that we only isolate students from in-person instruction as we are following the IDPH guidelines. The District has only experienced 2 positive cases thus far. Therefore the vast majority of individuals being “isolated” (not “quarantined” as that is a function of the Health Department) are due to single symptom isolation precautionary measures that the District is following. The nearly 90 individuals referred to in the article is evidence of the District taking these guidelines serious and implementing the guidelines as they are written. I hope this provides some clarity and context to the figures presented in the article. Again, we appreciate your continued understanding and cooperation during these uncertain times. We will also continue to provide timely communication with our school community as information becomes available. Sincerely, Dr. Adam Ehrman, Superintendent

Dear BESD #53 Families and Community, Today marks day 5 of in-person instruction. I am so proud that we have been able to offer our students in-person instruction even if it looks a little different than normal years. It was not easy to get to this point, but I am truly appreciative of each one these days as they have allowed for critical connections to be made for everyone in the organization. As I mentioned at the Board Meeting last night, I can not predict the future. However, I can predict that we will continue to use a calm approach and analyze all of the health data that impact BESD #53. We will continue to follow the ever-changing IDPH guidelines. These guidelines are strict and the “close contact” definition does unfortunately require many students to be isolated from in-person instruction when we have a positive case. A strategy that has helped some parents is not utilizing our busing system this year if that is an option for those students. This strategy definitely reduces the “close contact” for each student and thereby reduces the probability of that child being required to isolate from a positive case experienced in the District. We are always looking for ways to improve the likelihood of being able to continue with the in-person instructional model. So, this is just a suggestion for those parents that have that ability and choice to make that decision. Our goal is to simply prevent a two week isolation period for a student if possible. Again, I want to thank everyone for helping us make this year possible and I could not be anymore proud of BESD #53’s hardwork and effort right now. Educationally Yours, Dr. Adam Ehrman Superintendent, Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53

Dear BESD #53 Families and Community, Like other School Districts in the area, we experienced our first positive Covid-19 case today. While we all may recognize that positive cases are unavoidable in this day and age, today was still a jolt to the system for some people. Please know that we put procedural systems in place to handle this situation in a calm and collective manner. So today, we rapidly worked with the Health Department to provide all of the information we could to everyone that needs to know and we will continue to work with the Health Department. We understand that not everyone wanted to be notified of a singular positive case in the District, but I find it critical that we are communicating as much as possible right now. I am not sure that we will always be sending out a District-wide letter as we get more cases, but for the time being we will likely be over-communicating as a means to keep everyone informed. For situations like today, the process for communicating is a four-step process. First we find out that we have a positive case (typically from parents and caregivers). Next, we internally trace everyone that is defined as a "close contact" (that we are aware of). Then we call the “close contacts” ASAP. Lastly, we will communicate out from either the District or the School (this first communication came from the District). So this morning, we found out about a case and then identified who were “close contacts”. We then quickly made calls to close contacts and sent out a District letter to everyone as follow-up. Thank you to everyone for your patience, grace, and a willingness to work together. The only way we can all get through this crisis is if we do so together. Educationally Yours, Dr. Adam Ehrman Superintendent, Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53

Dear BESD #53 Family, We all recognize that returning to school this fall will be anything but normal. Even with the many safety modifications made which definitely will influence almost every aspect of the educational process, we all understand that Covid-19 will still shape this school year. For the time being the length of the school day has been modified as another safety measure to protect our students and staff, yet we all know that our schools are not immune to Covid-19. When the District receives notification that an individual whom was in our facilities has tested positive for Covid-19, we will work with the Health Department to provide all of the information we can to everyone that needs to know. We have new processes designed to assist with our ability to inform the Health Department for contact tracing purposes as well as to help us inform required individuals that have been in “close contact” as defined by the guidelines. I wish I could state that we will never have a case of Covid-19 at BESD #53, but that would be unrealistic. When we do have a case, it will most likely require some of our students to be isolated from in-person instruction for a bit of time. We have been working this summer to prepare processes that will hopefully minimize the educational disruption for these students whom require isolation from school. It is important to note that these students are only being isolated from in-person learning, not their ability to learn remotely. This is much easier said than done, but as we all go through the process I am confident that we will be able to drastically improve our organizational capabilities to remotely educate our students. Lastly, we know that Covid-19 has provided a thick layer of stress on all of us for an extended period of time. It has impacted people's lives in many different ways and it will continue to do so for the time being. I have seen many instances of people showing patience, grace, and a willingness to work together. These observed instances remind me that the only way we can all get through this crisis is if we do so together.

COVID-19 UPDATE 4:25 PM March 13, 2020 Hi, Governor Pritzker has just ordered that all schools close starting Tuesday March 17th and tentatively reopen on Monday, March 30th. Instead of using Emergency Days, we will put our remote learning plan in place so that students remain engaged and have the support of our staff during regular school hours. Starting Tuesday, you will see a link at www.besd53.org that will take you to grade and subject specific activities to be completed each day. I will send more information regarding this on Monday. If your child has medications at school, we ask that you pick them up on Monday the 16th between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. We want to make sure you have them available while they are out of school. We will continue to have breakfast and lunch available on school closure days for any student who qualifies for a free or reduced lunch. This will be available at Alan Shepard School only. Please use the back doors to the MPR which are off of the parking lot near the playground. This will be grab and go to limit large groups gathering to eat. Thank you very much for your patience during this most unusual and challenging time. I hope that everyone is well and remains so. Please do not hesitate to call me should you have any questions. This is new for everyone. -- James Duggan Ed. D. Assistant Superintendent Supplemental Interim Superintendent Bourbonnais School District 53

Hi, I wanted to inform you that we plan to have a regular school day on Monday. I am meeting with the area superintendents at 9:00 am Monday morning to assess the situation but no decisions have been made at this time. I would suggest you take a look at day care options in the event that we decide to close the schools. In the event that we close, we are getting prepared to provide remote learning for all the students. Many of the students were sent home with instructional materials today just in case as well as their Chromebooks. We also have a website ready to go that will be your guide for daily activities. Plans are also being made for increasing access to technology for those that do not have it. On a separate note, all after school activities as well as our parent information meetings for accelerated programming are canceled. We will reschedule those meetings for later in the Spring. Thank you very much for your patience and support! -- James Duggan Ed. D. Assistant Superintendent Supplemental Interim Superintendent Bourbonnais School District 53

Dear BESD 53 Students, Staff and Families, It is important to note that there are no identified cases of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) in our community. However, the health and safety of our students is our top priority, so we want to share with you information that the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has published for schools throughout the state. The good news at this time is that the health risk to the general public from coronavirus remains low. Currently, the IDPH recommends schools hold classes and events as usual, and follow routine cleaning and disinfecting procedures; no special measures are necessary. The IDPH also recommends the best way to protect against coronavirus is by taking the same everyday precautions against getting sick in general. These include: *Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. *Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. *Avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Staying home when you are sick. *Covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. *Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces. To see the complete recommendations to schools from IDPH, please click here. We will continue to closely monitor recommendations regarding COVID-19 and will update you as soon as there are any significant changes in recommendations for schools. Thank you for your support in helping to keep our school community healthy. Thank You

Hi, here is a tip for reading to your very young children from the University of Chicago's Thirty Million Word Project. Reading to a young child can be frustrating for all sorts of reasons. Try Book Sharing instead: open a book and have a conversation. Describe the pictures; count the pages; talk about what your child is interested in. Watch how this parent does it: https://t.co/iWRtp6rRnR (https://twitter.com/TMW3Ts/status/1224754495395188739?s=03)

Dear Parents and Guardians, I wanted to send a quick reminder to please remind your children that they should not approach any vehicle or individual that they do not know. This would be going to and from school but also any other times they are out in the neighborhood. Should they see anything that does not seem right, they should report it to you and the school as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

Hi, this message was previously sent in English.

Dear Parents and Guardians, In the Spring of 2019 the BESD 53 Board of Education approved a plan for learning at home on weather emergency days. However, the Illinois State Board of Education has placed new requirements on these plans and we have not yet met these new requirements. We are working with the Regional Superintendent to ensure that our plan meets the new requirements but at this time we do not have an approved plan.  Until further notice, if we have a weather emergency day it will be made up at the end of the school year.  I will alert you if this changes. Thank you and Happy New Year!

BESD#53 is monitoring the upcoming week of weather. We use -30 windchill on weather.com as the threshold for canceling for the cold. As of now, we plan on holding school tomorrow. We will keep you updated. As we look at next week, it is unlikely that we will hold school Wednesday under the current forecast. Next week is Camp T week so we are preparing an alternate schedule with group one going to Camp Monday/Tuesday and group two going Thursday/Friday. This shortens the trip by a day each. We will continue to keep you updated. As always, parents should utilize their judgment with their specific situation even if school is in session. ~Dr. Hollowell

The Illinois FFA Service Project this year is called "The Crayon Initiative." This project takes donations in the form of used crayons, recycles them, and makes new crayons to be distributed to children's hospitals across the nation. Their goal this year is to collect 2,000 pounds of crayons. Bourbonnais Elementary would like to help the Manteno FFA organization to reach this goal. Starting on Monday, May 14th, collection bins will be placed in the front offices of our buildings including the central office. We want to encourage teachers, students and parents to donate used crayons to this cause. Often times crayons are thrown out when kids are cleaning their desks. Parents and community members are encouraged to drop them off at the Central Office. The initiative will continue through Thursday, May 31st. Thanks!
