WINTER WEATHER/SCHOOL CANCELING PROCEDURES AND INFORMATION: As we approach winter and inclement weather, we want to notify you on how school closings work.
When do we close? In my six years as superintendent, we have avoided closing in the middle of the day, and we have avoided late starts. With so many working parents, we believe that either we have a full day of school, or we have a snow day, that scrambling for early dismissal or late start is a burden for our families and problematic for daycare arrangements.
How will you be notified? If conditions are deemed unsafe, we will cancel school. This decision will be made by 5:30am in collaboration with BBCHS and Bradley #61 and announced via Facebook, Twitter, BESD#53 App, Website, Text, and Automated Phone Call. We suggest downloading the district app. If it is possible to cancel the night before we will, but with the uncertainty of snowfall forecasts, it usually will be decided at 5:30am.
Why do we have school when others cancel? Keep in mind that our district is 10 square miles and we only have one rural bus route (Altorf). We will have school at times when Manteno, Herscher, St.Anne, St. George, etc. cancel due to their rural routes. Our decision is based on the road conditions within the Village of Bourbonnais not country roads.
Do we close for cold? If the forecast on weather.com calls for wind chills of -30 or colder, we will close for cold. We try to do this the night before, as temperature forecasts are more reliable than snow forecasts.
